Understanding and preventing Computer Vision Syndrome

The exponential use of digital devices has resulted from technological advancement.

Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, refers to a group of eye and vision problems caused by prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader, and cell phone use.Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), there was an increase in the use of digital devices, which had a significant impact on the eyes, causing ocular strain, chronic backache, shoulder and neck pain in many people.

When viewing digital screens for extended periods, many people experience eye discomfort and vision problems. The level of discomfort appears to rise in direct proportion to the amount of time spent on digital screens. Follow the 20-20-20 rule to help relieve digital eyestrain: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.

  • The amount of time spent on a computer or digital device is directly related to the severity of eye symptoms.
  • The monitor’s height and inclination should be at eye level to avoid stress on the eyes and neck.
  • Visual display terminals (devices) (VDT) distance: the closer the VDT is to the eyes, the more stress on the eyes.
  • Strain is caused by glare and reflections on Visual display terminals (devices) (VDT). It is preferable to have glare filters on the VDT.
  • Constantly staring at the screen without taking breaks can lead to CVS.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms associated with CVS are:

  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches.
  • Distorted vision.
  • Watery eyes.
  • Shoulder and neck pain

These symptoms may be caused by:

  • Inadequate lighting.
  • Glare on a computer screen.
  • Incorrect viewing distances
  • Bad seating posture.
  • Uncorrected vision issues
  • A combination of these elements.

Why is Computer Vision Syndrome Dangerous?

Although there is no evidence that CVS causes permanent eye damage, it can cause headaches, double vision, neck pain, and eye fatigue.

To determine how the eyes respond under normal seeing conditions, this testing can be performed without the use of eye drops. Eye drops may be used in some cases, such as when some of the eyes’ focusing power is hidden. They prevent the eyes from changing focus while testing is being performed. A doctor of optometry can determine the presence of CVS and recommend treatment options based on the results of these tests and the results of other tests.

Treatment of Computer Vision Syndrome

There are numerous solutions to vision problems caused by digital screens. They can, however, usually be alleviated by getting regular eye care and changing how the screen is viewed.

Individuals who do not require the use of eyeglasses for other daily activities may benefit from computer-specific glasses in some cases. Furthermore, people who already wear glasses may discover that their current prescription does not provide optimal vision for computer use.

Prescription glasses or contact lenses may not be adequate for computer work. Prescription lenses to meet the unique visual demands of computer viewing may be required. Special lens designs, lens powers or lens tints or coatings may help to maximize visual abilities and comfort for computer screens.

Some computer users have focusing or coordination issues that cannot be adequately corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. To treat these specific issues, a vision therapy programme may be required. Vision therapy, also known as visual training, is a prescribed structured programme of visual activities to improve visual abilities. It teaches the eyes and brain to collaborate more effectively. These eye exercises help to correct deficiencies in eye movement, focusing, and teaming while also reinforcing the eye-brain connection. Treatment may include both in-office and at-home training procedures.

How can CVS be prevented?

  • Keep the monitor at least 30 inches away from your eyes.
  • Lower the screen to 4 to 9 inches below eye level.
  • Keep air vents away from your face to avoid drying out your eyes.
  • Reduce glare by positioning lamps so that they do not reflect light onto the screen.
  • Maintain a clean screen.
  • Changes in the number of eyes should be checked on a regular basis.
  • Taking frequent breaks is recommended. Maintain the 20:20:20 rule, which states that every 20 minutes, focus on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
